Culter Fell is the most popular, highest and most shapely of this rolling range of hills on the Lanarkshire / Borders boundary, south of Biggar. On its own it makes a straightforward short hillwalk; as described here it is the first part of a longer, rough round above the reservoir, passing over Gathersnow Hill and finally Hudderstone, before a grand and easy descent.Terrain - Steep hill path to Culter Fell; continuation becomes boggier but eased by a windfarm track towards Hudderstone before final good grass track for the descent. 11:15am at Brodick Pier
NS022359 / KA27 8AY
A circular walk in Lower Glen Rosa from Brodick Pier. Exit Brodick Pier and turn right along the shore front. At the small Co-op at the north end of Brodick turn right and follow the path signposted Fisherman's Walk and follow path along the shoreline until the main road is reached at Cladach. Cross the road and follow the path signposted Goat Fell. When the road to Brodick Castle is reached turn left and then right at the sign for Glen Rosa. Follow this path along the glen with the river below on the left. The path can be quite muddy. Follow the path through the wood at the end of which there is a stile onto a narrow footpath that follows the glen along open hillside. The slope down to the river is quite steep but the footpath is straight and doesn't rise significantly at any point. At the bridge cross over and take a rest. This is a good spot for lunch weather permitting. Follow the footpath to a wide track and turn left onto the track which will take you back along the other side of the glen and the main road to Brodick. Stop at the Arran Heritage Museum en route to Brodick for tea, coffee, home baking and snacks. Optional visit to archeological and geological exhibits within museum if desired.Path can be muddy in parts. Boots essential. Eagles, deer, adders and red squirrels can be spotted. Binoculars would be handy. OS Explorer 361, OS Landranger 698.7mile / 14km
